Board of DirectorsCDSPI has 10 members which consist of nine provincial dental associations and the Canadian Dental Association. Its Board of Directors includes: Mr. L. R. Best (Chairman), Dr. J. Lyle R. Best is a veteran of more than 30 years in the Employee and Group Benefits Insurance industry. Lyle is an honorary member of the Alberta Dental Association and College was inducted into the Alberta Business Hall of Fame in 2006 and was an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalist in 2006 and 2007. Mr. Best was named Edmonton’s Businessman of the Year in 2005 and, in 2008, was named Business Owner of the Year by the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. In 2008, he was named a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his leadership as a fundraiser, mentor and volunteer with numerous charitable, sports and community organizations. He is a former Senator at the University of Alberta and has served as the Senate liaison to the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry as well as being a member of the admissions committee for Dentistry and Hygiene. At the Senate, he chaired the nominating committee and was a member of the honorary degrees committee. Mr. Best is the Co-Chair of the Management Sciences advisory board of Concordia University and has recently been appointed to the Board of Governors. He has been an executive in residence of the Rotman School of Business and the Institute of Corporate Directors governance essentials program in 2006 and 2007. He is a member of the President’s Advisory Counsel of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and is a Regent at Grant MacEwan University. In 2004, Venture Magazine named Lyle one of Alberta’s 50 most influential people. He is an associate member of and the Executive Director of the Edmonton Oilers Alumni Association. Mr. Best is the Co-Chair of the 2012 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships which will take place in Alberta in December 2011/January 2012. Mr. Best serves on numerous corporate and not-for-profit boards across Canada and around the world. Most recently, he has turned his attention to redevelopment efforts in Afghanistan and Haiti serving as Chairman of the Board of Peace Dividend Trust, an NGO based in New York, Ottawa, Great Britain and China. Mr. Best joined the Board at CDSPI’s annual meeting in September of 1998. Formerly Vice-Chairman of the Board, in May 2004 he became the first non-dentist chairman in the history of CDSPI. He is Chairman and CEO of the Quikcard group of companies.
Dr. Williams joined the Board at CDSPI’s Annual General Meeting in May, 2003. A 1986 graduate from Dalhousie University’s Dental Faculty, he embarked on a varied clinical career which first took him to Northern Ontario as a hospital-based dentist and then by bush plane to the First Nations communities in the region. His eventual return to Atlantic Canada saw him in the roles of associate dentist, part-time lecturer, locum practitioner and owner of a solo practice. Unfortunately that part of his career came to an end in 1996 when he suffered the partial loss of two fingers on his dominant hand in a carpentry accident. Dr. Williams went on to complete a Master of Business Administration at Saint Mary’s University, and since 2001 has been an associate with ROI Corporation, a national dental practice appraisal, brokerage and consulting firm. He is Vice-Chairman of the board of CDSPI’s wholly owned, Barbados domiciled, Captive Insurance subsidiary. He was a past Editorial Consultant for “business of dentistry issues” to the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association. Dr. Williams is a Realtor® in Nova Scotia and is a member of the Nova Scotia Dental Association. Dr. Williams has been a speaker at provincial dental association meetings, Canadian dental faculties and various study clubs on the topic of current trends in the Canadian dental practice marketplace and he has had articles on this subject published in national and regional dental journals. He is the Owner and Administrator of a seven-bed residential care facility in his hometown of Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia and is a director on the Board of Windsor Elms Village, a 108-bed nursing home in Windsor, Nova Scotia. He serves his community through his position as Co-Chair of the Tatamagouche School Advisory Council and is a past elected member of the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board.
Dr. Beaton graduated with a DDS from Dalhousie University in 1975. In 1989, he received a fellowship in the International College of Cranio Mandibular Orthopedics. He is past chairman of the BCDA Practice Management Committee, and member of the Economics Committee. Although currently not practising, he is a member of the BCDA and CDA. In 1985, he studied business management through the Dale Carnegie Management Seminars. In 1996, he became a Chartered Financial Planner through the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning where he studied insurance and investments. He is currently President of Rokadent Consulting, providing private fee-for-service retirement planning and investment strategies for individuals and small business owners. He has given numerous presentations to dental audiences on the subjects of practice management and financial planning. Dr. Beaton has been on the Board of CDSPI since October 1999. He has had years of board experience serving on many community NFP boards. He is a student of good corporate governance and a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors.
Dr. Wayne Chou was elected to CDSPI’s Board at the company’s Annual General Meeting in May, 2007. He was a voting member of the CDA’s General Assembly for several years, and was a member of the BC Dental Association’s Nominations and Awards Committee. In the past, Dr. Chou served as a representative of the CDA’s Board of Governors and has been an Assistant Clinical Professor at UBC’s Faculty of Dentistry. Dr. Chou has served as President of the Vancouver and District Dental Society and President of the British Columbia Dental Association. He has also previously served on the Organizing Committee for the Pacific Dental Conference. A UBC Faculty of Dentistry graduate, Dr. Chou operates a dental practice in Vancouver, B.C. providing surgical and prosthetic implant treatments in addition to general family dentistry.
Dr. Larder has more than three decades of experience in corporate governance in industries ranging from medical device to real estate to financial services. Tom joined the CDSPI Board in 1995 and served as Chairman for five years. After stepping down from the position of Chairman in 2004, he was honored by the Board with the title Chairman Emeritus. Dr. Larder earned his DDS from Dalhousie University (1975) and his Certificate of Endodontics from Tufts University of Dental Medicine (1977). Dr. Larder served as an Assistant Professor of Endodontics at Dalhousie University and a guest lecturer at Tufts. Amongst his many accomplishments, Dr. Larder is a former president of the Nova Scotia Dental Association and has been a registered insurance agent since 1995. Tom is a life-long learner and recently completed the Director’s Education Program at McGill University in Montreal (2010). Dr. Larder is a practical, focused, results-oriented administrator who is not afraid to dream of what might be outside that proverbial box.
Mr. Orr joined the Board at CDSPI’s Annual General Meeting in May 2001. Mr. Orr is a Senior Wealth Advisor and Director, Wealth Management with ScotiaMcLeod. Mr. Orr is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and holds an honours degree in business administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. Mr. Orr also serves on the board for the Diabetes Flame of Hope Golf Tournament in London.
Dr. Sullivan joined the Board in May 2004. Currently he practises in Orillia, Ontario and is on staff at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital and Barrie’s Royal Victoria Hospital. He is also on the faculty of Georgian College’s Dental Hygiene Program. He is the secretary of the Orillia Dental Association, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Georgian College Dental Program. He is also on the Orillia YMCA Fund Raising Committee and a director on the board of the Couchiching Conservancy Land Trust. For the Ontario Dental Association, he was chairman of the Economics of Practice Committee and has served on the Insurance Committee, the Fee Guide Committee and the Board of Governors. He received the Distinguished Service Award and the Barnabus Day Award from the ODA. He has also served as President of the Muskoka Simcoe Dental Society.
