Many of Canada’s top golf courses are private, but there are some glorious public tracks to try when you take your sticks on the road. Here are some picks based on a mix of course challenge and pure scenic beauty. Several of them are part of resort complexes so they make a perfect destination for a golf getaway.
Humber Valley – River Course – Deer Lake, NL
This is a masterpiece by legendary course designer Doug Carrick. Rolling terrain and undulating greens give experienced golfers a welcome challenge while enjoying the breathtaking views alongside the Humber River and the shores of Deer Lake.
Cabot Cliffs – Inverness, NS
This is the # 1 course in Canada according to both SCOREGolf Magazine and Golf Digest. So put it on your bucket list if you’re a serious golfer. In fact, it’s one of several world-class courses under the umbrella of Golf Cape Breton.
Le Geant & Le Diable – Mont Tremblant, QC
Mont Tremblant is renowned as a skiers’ paradise, but once the snow melts it offers a different kind of heaven for avid golfers. Nestled in the Laurentian Mountains, with lots of elevated tees and sweeping fairways, you’re going to want to let your big dog eat. The fall is the perfect time to go for dazzling colours and good package deals.
Muskoka Bay Club – Gravenhurst, ON
This is the only public golf course in Ontario in SCOREGolf’s top 20. And for good reason. It’s a magnificently maintained course, carved out of the granite rock and surrounding forest. You’ll see some strange bounces if you stray from the fairway.
Granite Hills Golf Club – Lac Du Bonnet, MB
More granite! This is a spectacular new course that slices through the Canadian Shield and winds along the shores of Lake Lac du Bonnet. The two-hour drive from Winnipeg is well worth the trip.
Dakota Dunes Golf Links – Whitecap, SK
Mountain ranges and oceanside vistas are certainly impressive, but the prairies offer a striking beauty of their own. With the black tees at 7,300 yards, whatever your ability you will find the yardage and challenge to fit your game—especially when the wind is up.
Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge – Jasper, AB
Opened in 1925, this iconic Canadian course snakes through the thick Alberta forests with views of the Rocky Mountains from almost every hole. If you’re lucky you’ll get to take a selfie with a bear! The resort is equally superb if you’re looking for a truly memorable golf holiday.
Bear Mountain Resort – Victoria, BC
This gem just outside of Victoria features “36 holes of Nicklaus Design Golf.” You can tackle the rugged and challenging Mountain Course (site of a PGA Tour Champions event) , or opt for the more serene Valley Course. Both offer spectacular views of the Olympic Mountains across the Straight of Juan de Fuca.
