Travel Edge and Travel Edge Plus Insurance Plans Policy Changes in 2021

Premiums for Travel Edge and Travel Edge Plus plans will not increase in 2021. Premiums will remain the same as the 2020 rates.

The following change was effective on November 1, 2020 for all existing policies and will apply to policies issued during 2021:

The Travel Edge and Travel Edge Plus policies will now cover medical emergencies that are not related to the reason a travel advisory was issued by the Government of Canada.

For example, if you are travelling to a destination with a Government of Canada issued travel advisory such as the current COVID-19 Global Travel Advisory, this means you can travel to that area and be eligible for coverage for medical emergencies providing any claim you make is not related to COVID-19 and subject to the remaining terms and conditions of the policy.

Previously, no coverage would be available when an insured was traveling while a travel advisory was in place, even if the travel medical claim was unrelated to the reason for the travel advisory.

Previous policy wording:

Located under the “What Is Not Covered – Limitations and Exclusions – Travel Edge & Travel Edge Plus“ Section

20. Any loss incurred in a city, region, or country when, prior to the effective date, Global Affairs Canada issued a written warning to avoid all travel, or to avoid non-essential travel, to that city, region, or country.

Updated current policy wording and 2021 policy wording:

Any loss incurred in a city, region, or country when, prior to the effective date, the government of Canada issued a written warning to avoid all travel, or to avoid non-essential travel, to that city, region, or country and such loss is due to, contributed to by, or resulting from the reason for the warning.

Effective Date means the date and time coverage starts, as indicated under the Effective Date provision of each plan purchased.
