Dr. Aisling Whitaker knows what it takes to build a thriving dental practice from the ground up. Twice. As the founder of two successful Midtown Toronto clinics, she brings both academic depth and real-world experience to the growing community of dentists looking to start, scale, and lead their own practices.
Before earning her dental degree, Dr. Whitaker completed a PhD in psychology and spent more than 15 years consulting with dental clinics in Ireland and Canada on marketing, team culture, and retention. That background continues to shape her philosophy today: success in dentistry isn’t just about clinical excellence. It’s about understanding people.
A respected speaker for organizations including the Ontario Dental Association and Henry Schein, and a faculty member for Clearly Aligned (comprehensive aligner education platform), Dr. Whitaker shares practical insights into practice startups, marketing, and leadership. Her message is clear: with the right planning and mindset, any dentist can build a practice that reflects their values and vision.
From Scratch Startups to Scalable Success
Dr. Whitaker’s entrepreneurial journey began with the bold decision to open her own practice from scratch rather than buy an existing one. “I wanted to control every part of the experience,” she explains, “from the type of dentistry and technology to the team and culture.”
Starting as a new arrival to Canada with student debt and no local credit history, she relied on expert financial advice and a long-term plan. “I saved myself hundreds of thousands of dollars by choosing and working with the right advisors,” she says. Dr. Whitaker believes that working with a team of advisors who understand the realities of dentistry – from practice structure to insurance – and can spot opportunities and risks that others might miss, has contributed significantly to her practices over the years.
Within a year of that first meeting with her bank, she was welcoming patients to Bitehaus Dental. Her early years required determination and financial discipline. “We lived as students for the first five years after graduation,” she recalls. “That was the plan: invest everything back into the practice.”
Building a Brand Through Connection
Dr. Whitaker’s marketing strategy was rooted in authenticity and community. Long before opening day, she was attending local events, meeting nearby business owners, and connecting online. “Instagram was a huge source for my new patients,” she says. “We didn’t start at zero—I had 150 patients booked before we even opened.”
Her approach worked. Bitehaus Dental grew rapidly, adding more than 100 new patients each month for the first few years and prompting the launch of a second location.
At the heart of her success is genuine connection. “We need to remember that we’re part of the community,” she says. “People trust you when they see who you are and why you’re passionate about what you do.”
Giving Back to the Dental Community
In 2022, Dr. Whitaker expanded her focus on supporting others in the profession. She co-founded Dental Hive, a free app and online community that helps dentists and dental staff find jobs, build teams, learn, and connect. Together with co-founder Felicia Sprague, she aimed to make hiring more accessible and affordable for the profession.
That same year, she launched The Bite School, a marketing education platform that helps dentists navigate digital tools like Google Business and Instagram—skills that were instrumental in her own growth.
A Mentor for Modern Dentistry
Today, Dr. Whitaker continues to share her experience with a new generation of dental entrepreneurs, inspiring those who want to create practices that reflect their purpose, culture, and community.
Her advice for dentists considering the leap into ownership is both pragmatic and inspiring:
“Have a five- and ten-year plan.” Think about what success looks like for you, personally and professionally, then surround yourself with the right advisors early on. It’s the best investment you can make.”
