The Government of Ontario will stop its coverage of out-of-country emergency medical expenses as of January 1, 2020, except for dialysis treatments. OHIP currently covers up to $400 a day for inpatient treatments and up to $50 a day for emergency outpatient and doctor services.
“Some Canadians may still be under the false impression that their provincial health plan will cover most or all of their out-of-country medical expenses,” explains Dan Keon, Vice-President of Market Management at Allianz Global Assistance Canada. “However, prior to the changes in policy, OHIP had only provided reimbursement for roughly 5% of out-of-country medical expenses.”
“We have always strongly recommended health coverage for travel outside of Canada,” says Bee Braganza, Manager, CDSPI Advisory Services Inc. “Now, it’s more important than ever. Even a short cross-border trip could result in a severe financial blow if you were to suffer a serious illness or injury.”
CDSPI’s Travel Edge Insurance offers an excellent solution for both short and long trips.
