Perspective on Working with Dentists

Jaye is a specialist in estate planning, and he also enjoys the other aspects of working with dentists such as navigating foreign tax laws and resolving cross-border financial planning issues. Working with clients to provide solutions is what makes financial planning one of the most rewarding careers.

“Dentists are driven to provide an excellent experience for their patients in their practice. This inspires me and I enjoy guiding them through the financial planning process.”

Jaye considers every challenge a learning opportunity and his key objective is to help clients create a strong financial plan. “Every February, we receive calls about making Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contributions. This is a chance to refine your strategy by understanding the RRSP and its advantages. Contributing to an RRSP offers the ability to lower your tax liability for the previous tax year while also saving toward a goal. It is important to define your goal and to know what you want your retirement to look like. This is why we talk about having a financial plan – so you can reach your financial goals, be they retirement planning, estate planning, planning for the education of your children, or insurance planning.”

One piece of financial advice that Jaye wants every dentist to hear is that critical illness insurance is extremely important. “I highly recommend that early on in your career you have a conversation with an insurance advisor about getting critical illness insurance. It can provide a lump sum payment to help you, your family and your practice when dealing with a serious illness. It is important to get advice to ensure you are protected for major life and career disruptors.”

Financial wellness can mean a lot of different things, depending on the person. It could mean making sure you have an emergency fund, and it could also mean making sure that there is insurance in place to cover either tax liabilities or to make it easier for the next generation.

Outside of work, Jaye spends his time with his family in St. Albert, Alberta. He enjoys watching movies, reading comics, and drawing the characters with his children. Jaye also enjoys skiing in the winter and playing golf in the summer.

Jaye has volunteered for almost 20 years on provincial and municipal political campaigns, as a constituency organizer and as a candidate in both municipal and provincial elections. He is inspired to help others have a better understanding of finance, volunteering with the Financial Planning Standards Council Canada, as well with the Junior Achievement, Northern Alberta & NWT of Canada.
