Allianz

Travel Edge and Travel Edge Plus

Illness, accidents and medical emergencies can happen at any time—including on vacation. Your provincial and territorial government health insurance plans may only cover a fraction of healthcare expenses incurred outside your home province and may not provide any coverage if you travel abroad.

With Travel Edge and Travel Edge Plus you'll receive the following benefits;

icon_Ambulance_blue

Emergency medical coverage

With the CDSPI Travel Edge annual plan, you and your insured family members are protected up to $5 million in emergency medical coverage for each insured person per trip, subject to any individual benefit maximums.

icon_Lifesaver

Unlimited trips with one annual premium

With CDSPI Travel Edge you pay one annual premium that covers you for the entire year, no matter how many trips you take — so you don’t have to buy insurance every time you travel.

Take longer trips

Plan the trip of your dreams! These trips can be up to 15, 30, 60 or 90 days in duration, as selected at the time of application. Get the details on how this works.

Avoid out-of-pocket expenses

If you're faced with any medical related travel expenses while abroad, your Travel Edge insurance will pay your service providers directly so you won't have to worry about any out-of-pocket expenses.

Choose between single or family plan

The choice is yours. With the family coverage option, you can insure parents and all dependent children under 21 years of age, or up to and including age 25 if attending university full-time.

When you purchase Travel Edge Plus you'll receive all the benefits listed above, plus Flight Accident, Baggage Loss and Trip Cancellation Insurance.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

You and your insured family members will receive up to $2,000 per person per trip for the non-refundable portion of prepaid travel arrangements and airfare in certain cases.

icon_Suitcase

Baggage Loss

If baggage is lost, stolen or damaged on an insured trip, you or insured family members will be reimbursed up to $250 per baggage item with a $25 deductible.

icon_Airplane

Flight Accident

If an insured persons death occurs as a result of an injury caused by an accident while travelling as passengers on an airplane or helicopter shuttle service, the beneficiary will receive $200,000 per insured person.

How It Works

When you purchase Travel Edge or Travel Edge Plus, you can enjoy the flexibility of taking unlimited trips within a year. You can then select the duration of your trips from four options: 15, 30, 60, or 90 days. For instance, if you choose the 15-day duration, you are covered for an unlimited number of 15-day trips throughout the year.

However, if you decide to take a trip that exceeds the duration you've chosen, you don't need to worry. Simply give CDSPI a call and pay for an additional "top up" to cover the extra days beyond your chosen limit. In the example provided, if you take a 21-day trip, you would need to pay for an extra 6 days of coverage to ensure that you are fully covered for the entire trip. This way, you can enjoy your travels with peace of mind, knowing that you are adequately covered.

FAQs

If your travel plans take you outside your home province or territory, it’s important to know your provincial or territorial government health insurance plan (GHIP) may not cover all your medical expenses.

If you do have a medical emergency, in most cases, the province you’re visiting will bill your home province directly. You won’t have to cover costs upfront – unless you’re visiting Quebec. As the only province not to sign an interprovincial billing agreement, Quebec’s visitors may have to pay for medical costs and then submit claims for reimbursement to their home province. In some cases, this also may be true for Quebec residents visiting other provinces.

For theses reasons, you should consider purchasing travel protection which will cover medical expenses not covered by your GHIP. And remember, wherever you are, you’ll need to show your health card to prove you’re insured, so make sure to bring it with you when travelling.

Not all medical expenses are covered by your government health insurance plan (GHIP) if you’re outside your home province. Services you may be required to pay for if you don’t have travel insurance include ambulance services or transportation back home. In addition, your insurance coverage for emergency medical care may be limited to the cost of the service in your home province. You would be responsible for the difference if fees are higher in the province you're visiting.

By purchasing travel protection you can help fill in these gaps in coverage.

You are eligible to apply for single or family coverage if you are:

  • A dentist qualified to practise dentistry in Canada, who is a member of the CDA or a participating provincial or territorial dental association (in Quebec, only CDA members are eligible).
  • A full-time or graduate student in a Canadian faculty or college of dentistry.
  • A dentist under 76 years of age who is retired, non-practising or receiving disability benefits and who practised in Canada and was a member of the CDA or a participating provincial or territorial dental association.
  • A dental practice staff member who is employed by an eligible dentist:
  • An employee or retiree of a participating dental association or organization; or
  • Family members of eligible individual listed above (a through e) are eligible including: your legal or common-law spouse (the person who has been living with you in a conjugal relationship continuously for at least one year), widow, widower, parent, brother, sister, legal guardian, stepparent, stepbrother, stepsister, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, grandparent, grandchild, in-law, ward, or child. A caregiver is also considered a family member but only when travelling with your dependent child/children*.

Dependent Child/Children means your or your spouse’s unmarried child who is:

  • dependent upon you for his/her sole means of support and, who is at least 15 days of age, but less than age 21, or
  • if attending an accredited college or university as a full-time student up to and including age 25, or
  • by reason of mental or physical impairment, is incapable of self-sustaining employment and is totally dependent upon you for support within the terms of the Income Tax Act.

To be eligible for coverage, each applicant coverage must:

  • be at least 15 days old and under 76 years of age; and
  • be insured for benefits under a Canadian government health insurance plan during the entire period of coverage; and
  • not reside in a nursing home and receive nursing care; and

Yes, if you have purchased family coverage, then your family members will be covered for all trips, whether travelling together or independently.

Yes, with Travel Edge Plus. If, while on an insured trip your baggage is lost, stolen or damaged by burglary, fire or transportation hazards or while in any hotel or other building, subject to a $25 deductible per claim and a limit of $250 per item, you will be reimbursed up to the maximum coverage amount for the type of coverage (single or family) you have selected and for which the appropriate premium has been paid. The loss must be supported in writing by an authorized official and/or police report.

  3. Loss due to normal depreciation of the value of your articles.
  4. Loss of, or damage to, money, eyeglasses, sunglasses, contact lenses, medication, hearing aids, artificial teeth, tickets, documents, jewellery, or camera equipment.

  8. Any loss or damage directly or indirectly resulting from, or arising out of, or in connection with any act of war or terrorism or nuclear incident.

Some Canadians may have travel insurance through their employer benefits program or as part of benefits included on a credit card. We recommend reviewing your coverage levels by contacting your employee or credit card benefits provider before travelling to review the types of benefits included, any special terms and conditions (i.e. whether your trip costs need to be paid on your credit card to be eligible for coverage) as well as the dollar limits for each benefit to ensure they’re adequate.

A standalone travel insurance policy can provide more comprehensive protection and should be considered if the travel coverage provided through your credit card or employer benefits is not sufficient for your travel protection needs.
